Taaramäe loses red to fall

The Este Rein Taaramäe has lost the overall leadership of the 76th Spain tour through a mass crash. The 34-year-old was involved on Wednesday in a crash well twelve kilometers before the target of the fifth stage, the large parts of the field had brought to fall. Although the Peloton throttled the pace for a few kilometers, Taaramäe did not come back. Beneficer was the hitherto two-placed Frenchman Kenny Elisonde, who took over the red jersey of the leader and lies five seconds in front of the Slovenian defending champion Primoz Roglic.

Jakobsen as second again

The 184.4-kilometer portion of Tarancon to Albacete was won in a hectic mass sprint of Jasper Philipsen. The Belgian prevailed in front of the Dutch Fabio Jakobsen as well as the Italian Alberto Dainese and celebrated his already second daily victory at the previous Vuelta.

In the momentary fall on an otherwise quiet stage, no driver was seriously injured after the first impressions. However, the Frenchman Romain Bardet must probably bury all hopes for a good overall placement. The captain of the German DSM team stayed on the street after the fall, reached the target with several minutes of residue and tattered jersey.

On the sixth stage on Thursday over 158.3 kilometers from Requena on the Alto de la Montaña de Cullera, the favorites must be alert to the overall victory in the short but steep mountain ink. The Vuelta ends on 5 September with a single time trial in Santiago de Compostela.
